NOTICES for SUNDAY 5 MAY 2024
EASTER VII

Pentecost
Next Sunday is Pentecost Sunday and the end of Eastertide.  As we recall the coming of the Holy Spirit on the disciples “as tongues of fire”, we invite everyone in the congregation to wear something red to Mass next Sunday.

Young Adults at Pentecost
Our young adult (18-35) community will hold two events next Saturday, 18 May, Pentecost Eve.  Starting at 4pm, there will be a Retreat Afternoon, “Opening our Hearts to God’s Spirit, with St Ignatius”, with Fr David Stewart sj.  This is an introduction to the life and spirituality of St Ignatius with some gentle guided prayer in the Ignatian way.  Then we will prepare for a bring-and-share celebration meal for Pentecost, from 7pm onwards in the Small Hall.  Anyone who has already been to one of these knows all about the wonderful international food, kindly prepared by yourselves for each other, and the great company and friendship across the evening.  Please bring a favourite dish, small or large, to share.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Communications Sunday
Today is World Communications Day.  There is a special collection for the apostolate of communications.  Please see the pastoral letter from Bishop Joseph Toal, President of the  National Communications Commission of the Bishops’ Conference, available in the narthex.

Becoming a Eucharistic Minister
Eucharistic Ministers assist the priest in distributing holy communion at Mass.  If you would like to become a Eucharistic Minister, there will be a training session on Tuesday 21 May at 7pm where we will explore the theology of the eucharist and equip you with the practical skills faithfully to serve in this ministry.  If interested, please contact ejc@jesuit.org.uk

New Missals
In November, the translation of the scripture readings used at Mass is changing in Scotland.  Since 1969, we have been using the Jerusalem Bible translation.  With developments in translation techniques and biblical scholarship, the bishops have decided to switch to the English Standard Version translation.  New missals are being produced which will include the new readings along with the new translation of the Mass texts which came out in 2010.  There will be four versions of the people’s Sunday Missal available: a standard hardback missal (£19.95); a white leather presentation edition (£29.95); a bonded leather hardback edition (£29.95); and a paperback edition for the year Advent 2024 to Christ the King 2025 (£9.95).  You can pre-order these missals by signing-up in the narthex.  Orders need to be in by Sunday 23 June.  Payment will be collected when the missals are delivered in October.  Alternatively, you can order your own missal at newlectionary.org

Parish Accounts 2023
On the centre pages of this week’s newsletter, you will find the parish accounts for 2023 (the diocese financial year runs from January to December).  These are being published so everyone in the parish can see where the money comes from and where it goes.  If you have any questions, please do ask or email.

Music at 10.30am Mass Today
Before Mass: Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) Kyrie della Domenica
During communion: John Frederick Bridge (1844-1924) Meditation
After communion: Philip Stopford (b.1976) In my Father’s house
Marian anthem: Edward Elgar (1857-1934) Ave Maria

May – Month of Our Lady
May is a month of devotion to Our Lady.  At end of 10.30am Mass each Sunday, we will process to the Lady Chapel and sing a Marian motet.  You are invited to visit the Lady Chapel during the month and to leave flowers – we will make sure they are put in water.

Training Session for Welcomers
There will be a training session for everyone who is a Welcomer at Sacred Heart Church on Monday 17 June at 7pm.  Please make a note in your diary.

Schola Cantorum Auditions
We will soon say farewell to some of our choral scholars as the university year ends and they move on to pastures new.  Auditions for new choral scholarships take place on the afternoon of Sunday 19 May.  If you know of a young person (16+ in full time education or recently graduated) who might be interested, please alert them to this opportunity.  More information on the parish website.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
The journey to becoming Catholic, either through baptism or reception into the Catholic Church at Easter, begins again on Wednesday 22 May at 7pm.  Our new course this past year has proved popular and appreciated and we are making an adjustment for 2024-25 so that people who have already expressed an interest will meet monthly from May until August, ahead of the programme proper starting in September.  If you are interested, or know someone who is, or if you would like to volunteer to help with RCIA, please contact Andrew Cassidy (Parish Pastoral Associate) at ejcpastoral@jesuit.org.uk

Parish Synod Weekend
There will be a weekend of events around our patronal feast of the Sacred Heart (Friday 7 to Sunday 9 June 2024) offering the opportunity to pick up again the themes of the Synod and especially those priorities for development identified at our own Synod meetings in January 2022.  It will also be a celebration of the activities of this Catholic community and an opportunity to get to know each other better and to share our faith in different ways.  We will be joined by Archbishop Leo Cushley for the Saturday morning.  Please make a note in your diary and keep the weekend free.

Sacred Scripture Reflection Day
The translation of scripture we hear at Mass is changing this Advent.  The archdiocese has organised a day of prayer, study and discussion to learn more and to reflect on the gift of the word of God for the Church.  Saturday 8 June, 10am to 3pm, at the Gillis Centre EH9 1BB.  bit.ly/treasuringthegift

Weekly Offerings
Thank you to all those who have switched their weekly offering from cash in the plate on Sundays to a regular weekly or monthly bank transfer.  This makes a big difference to our financial security and planning.  If you are a UK tax-payer and sign a Gift Aid form, the value of your contribution is significantly increased: for every £1 you give, we are able to claim an additional 25p from the UK Treasury at no further cost to yourself.  If you have not already arranged a Standing Order or made a Gift Aid Declaration, please consider doing so.  Information and forms are available in the narthex.

Edinburgh Jesuit Centre Mailing List
Each Friday afternoon, we send out a short email reminder of concerts, talks, retreats and other events at Sacred Heart Church.  You can join the mailing list by emailing ejcpastoral@jesuit.org.uk  You can unsubscribe at any time.
